Juteopolis – Education & Outreach

Juteopolis Conceptual Exhibition Design Project

SSA has once again been collaborating with DJCAD on the relationship between design thinking and design practice. SSA Vice President Louise Ritchie and Brian Kelly, Educational Outreach Officer, Dundee Heritage, worked with Carol Aitken, Lecturer and Andy Milligan, Programme Director IED. Juteopolis was the catalyst from which 2nd year design students created a conceptual exhibition for Centre Space DCA. As part of this six week project Louise and Carol delivered an Emotive Object Workshop which developed design thinking through object making tasks that explored their initial reactions to the subject matter and the exhibition/installation project. Students assembled a variety of materials to refine their spatial ideas providing an intuitive method for students to create rapid physical responses reflecting the material and industrial heritage of Dundee. Louise took part in group tutorials and the final presentation of designs. Examples can be found here.

Juteopolis@ Verdant Works Hidden Cube Trail Competition 2010

Juteopolis was our highly successful collaborative installation, which was conceived and created for our Annual Exhibition @ Vision building in 2009. In 2010, Juteopolis was incorporated into the Dundee Heritage Permanent Collection and to mark that event, this unique artwork was installed by Louise Ritchie and Gayle Nelson in 2010. The sculpture was placed in and around the historical machinery becoming very much a part of the museum. To coincide with this exhibition SSA created a Hidden Cube Trail Competition for children aged 3-12. The trail placed a series of cubes with challenges hidden around the museum for the children to find. The trail received a great response from children exploring the visitor attraction from not only Dundee but from all over the country.

Exquisite Corpse-Drawing Workshop, East Renfrewshire Council, Glasgow

Louise Ritchie was invited to devise and deliver a drawing workshop as part of the Redrawing Professional Members Exhibition 2010 and Exposure Art Festival 2010, Glasgow with Louise working with S5 and S6 pupils from the area of East Renfrewshire. The workshop explored ideas of ownership and artistic provenance through the Exquisite Corpse process. Exquisite Corpse derives from the old parlour game Consequences which is a collection of words or images and was adapted by the surrealists who used drawing and collage to create a collaborative image.
